Licensing, Rules & Age Requirements

The Sandman Triathlon is a USA Triathlon sanctioned event and all USAT rules will be followed and strictly enforced. It is the responsibility of the athlete to be familiar with those rules. No drafting is allowed and will be monitored by roving draft marshals. Helmets must be ANSI/Snell or approved (those manufactured before March 10, 1999) or Comsumer Product Safety Commission apporved (those manufactured after 3/10/1999) and worn AT ALL TIMES while on the bike. Wet suits, aerobars and disk wheels are permitted as per the USA Triathlon rulebook. The complete rulebook can be accessed at www.usatriathlon.org. Since the race is USA Triathlon sanctioned, non-USAT members are required to purchase a one-day event license. This is achieved by including an additional $10 with your entry fee and filling out a USA Triathlon one-day permit form at Packet Pick-up.

USA TRIATHLON HAS INSTITUTED A NEW POLICY WITH REGARD TO ANNUAL MEMBERS WHO DO NOT BRING THEIR MEMBERSHIP CARD TO PACKET PICK-UP.  YOU WILL NO LONGER BE PERMITTED TO FILL OUT A "DUPLICATE" LICENSE FORM.  YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO PAY THE $10 ONE-DAY PERMIT FEE IF YOU DO NOT BRING YOUR MEMBERSHIP CARD. ANNUAL LICENSES WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE AT PACKET PICK-UP.

AGE RESTRICTIONS:  NO ONE UNDER THE AGE OF 18 MAY PARTICIPATE IN THIS EVENT.

The listed age restrictions are our written, established policy.  Since we assume that most people will read, understand and follow the policy, we will not consider requests to overlook the policy on a case by case basis.  Please do not call or e-mail with requests for special consideration.

Timing

We will use the ChampionChip timing system to more quickly and accurately obtain and process race splits.  The system consists of a small chip that is worn on a velcro strap around your ankle.  You will receive your timing chip on race morning and you will be required to wear it throughout the duration of the event.  When you pick up your chip, please make sure that the bib number assigned to the chip corresponds to your bib number.  Volunteers will collect your chip as soon as you complete the event.
Timing services provided by Kale Enterprises, Inc.

In order to ensure that the mats can read the chips as athletes enter and exit the transition area for the bicycle portion of the event, participants will not be permitted to ride within the transition area or across the mats.  Clearly marked areas will designate where you may mount your bike after exiting and the dismount area will also be clearly marked as you return from the bike course.  Failure to abide by this rule will result in time penalties and/or disqualification.

For athletes who have their own ChampionChip, please be sure to put your code number on the race application where requested.  If registering on-line, your code will be requested if you indicate that you have your own chip.  If you show up on race day with a personal chip and you have not registered the number with us in advance, please use one of our chips instead of your own.  This will avoid the possibility of having the wrong chip code assigned to you and result in no times being generated.

Even though we are using the ChampionChip timing system, you are still required to attach your frame number to your bike as well as wear your bib number - FACING FORWARD - at all times on the run. USA Triathlon rules require that you wear a bib number on the entire run.

IN THE EVENT YOU LOSE OR FAIL TO RETURN YOUR CHIP, YOU WILL BE CHARGED $35 FOR ITS REPLACEMENT.  FAILURE TO PAY THE REPLACEMENT FEE WILL RESULT IN A FIVE (5) YEAR SUSPENSION FROM PARTICIPATION IN THE SANDMAN TRIATHLON.
