Volunteer Information
In order to put on a safe and enjoyable race for all, the Sandman Triathlon requires over 250 volunteers. If you know someone participating in the event or just would like to be part of the Sandman Triathlon experience, please consider being a volunteer. There are numerous job on both Saturday and Sunday and no experience is required!  Please click on the links below for a description of each job.

HOW TO SIGN UP:
      The easiest way to register as a volunteer is to download a Volunteer Registration Form in Word format by clicking on the file name below. Fill in all of the information, save it and then forward it as an attachment to our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteers@sandmantri.com.

            ** Download the file below to your disk.
            ** Fill in all of the requested information using Word.
            ** Save the document after entering your information.
            ** Send the document as an attachment to our Volunteer Coordinator at
                 volunteers@sandmantri.com
            ** Shortly after we process your application, you will receive a confirmation
                 from us (either by mail or e-mail) with more specifics.
            ** 1-2 weeks before the race you will receive final information concerning your
                 specific position.

Packet Pick-up:
Packet Pick-up will be held at the Great NeckLocation of Final Kick Sports. located in the Marina Shores Shoppes off Great Neck Road (2865 Lynnhaven Drive).  Packet Pick-up will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008 from 1:00 to 6:00 PM.  Shift times of 12:00-3:00 PM and 2:45-6:00 PM are available.
Duties:
  • Direct athletes as to what to do at Packet Pick-up
  • Review paperwork to ensure we have all of the required information
  • Collect money for registration and license fees
  • Pass out packets and answer general questions about the race

Swim Course Volunteer:
Swim Course Volunteers will report to the 24th Street Park at 6:30 AM.  You will check-in at the Volunteer Table and receive your T-shirt.  You will then report to the Swim Course Coordinator for specific directions.  After the race is over, you are invited to join us for the Post-Race Party.
Duties:
  • Assist swimmers in getting into and out of the water
  • Help direct the swimmers into the transition area at the end of the swim
  • Help maintain safety in the vacinity of the swim start and finish areas
  • Help ensure that all swimmers are wearing the appropriate swim cap
  • Help pass out timing chips before athletes begin the event

Bike Course Volunteer:
Bike Course Volunteers will report to the 24th Street Park at 6:00 AM.  You will check-in at the Volunteer Table and receive your T-shirt.  You will then report to the Bike Course Coordinator for specific directions and for your intersection assignment.  YOU WILL THEN GO TO YOUR APPROPRIATE INTERSECTION USING YOUR OWN MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION.  YOU MUST BE AT YOUR POST NO LATER THAN 6:45 AM.  After the race is over, you are invited to join us for the Post-Race Party.
Duties:
  • Direct athletes as to the direction of the course during the race
  • Provide verbal instructions to athletes where needed
  • Provide assistance in monitoring drafting and other rules, if requested
  • Aid in directing motorists at intersections where vehicles are permitted to cross the course

Run Course Volunteer:
Run Course Volunteers will report to the 24th Street Park at 6:45 AM.  You will check-in at the Volunteer Table and receive your T-shirt.  You will then report to the Run Course Coordinator for specific directions and for your course assignment.  You will either walk to your post or we will transport you depending on where your assignment requires you to be. You need to be at your post by 8:00 AM.  After the race is over, you are invited to join us for the Post-Race Party.
Duties:
  • Direct athletes as to the direction of the course during the race
  • Provide verbal instructions to athletes where needed
  • Keep pedestrians out of the way of the runners as much as possible.

Clean-Up Volunteer:
Clean-up Volunteers will report to the 24th Street Park by 10:00 AM.  You will check-in at the Volunteer Table and receive your T-shirt.  You will be given specific directions as to your duties by the Volunteer Coordinator.  After the race is over, you are invited to join us for the Post-Race Party.
Duties:
  • Take apart and stow bike rack materials
  • Pick up cones used in the vacinity of the transition area
  • Pick up lost-and-found items
  • Roll up sand fencing from the transition area
  • Load sandbags and stanchions on trucks for removal
  • Clean up trash and debris from the transition area
  • Volunteers should not mind getting a little dirty and should be able to lift at least 25 lbs

Hospitality Volunteer:
Hospitality Volunteers will report to the 24th Street Park at 6:45 AM.  You will check-in at the Volunteer Table and receive your T-shirt.  You will then report to the Finish Line Hospitality Coordinator for specific directions.  After the race is over, you are invited to join us for the Post-Race Party.
Duties:
  • Help with set up and distribution of finish line food and beverages to the athletes in the 24th Street Park
  • Help with cleaning up the 24th Street Park throughout the event

Transition Area Volunteer:
Transition Area Volunteers will report to the 24th Street Park at 5:30 AM.  You will check-in at the Volunteer Table and receive your T-shirt.  You will then report to the Transition Area Coordinator for specific directions.  After the race is over, you are invited to join us for the Post-Race Party.
Duties:
  • Help with numbering athletes as they enter the transition area
  • Maintain security in the transition area by limiting access to volunteers and athletes only
  • Help direct athetes as to direction of travel within the transition area
  • Help keep the transition area clear of any obstacles that could endanger safety
  • Help protect athletes property from theft and/or tampering while in the transition area
  • If requested, help with bike and helmet safety checks

Water Stop Volunteer:
Water Stop Volunteers will report to the 24th Street Park at 6:45 AM.  You will check-in at the Volunteer Table and receive your T-shirt.  You will then report to the Run Course Coordinator for specific directions.  You will either walk to your post or we will transport you depending on which you prefer. You need to be at your post by 7:30 AM.  After the race is over, you are invited to join us for the Post-Race Party.
Duties:
  • Prepare cups of water and/or fluid replacement beverages to athletes
  • Clean up the area around your water stop after athletes deposit their cups
  • Maintain an ample supply of full cups for the athletes
  • Pass out fluids to the athletes as they run by your stop
  • Set up and breakdown the equipment provided to your water stop

Finish Line / Timing Volunteer:
Finish Line / Timing Volunteers will report to the 24th Street Park at 6:30 AM.  You will check-in at the Volunteer Table and receive your T-shirt.  You will then report to the Finish Line Coordinator for specific directions.  After the race is over, you are invited to join us for the Post-Race Party.
Duties:
  • Pass out timing chips to athletes if requested (Requires you arrive at 5:45 AM)
  • Direct athletes over the timing mats at one of 5 time points
  • Help collect timing chips from athletes as they finish the race
  • Keep athletes from wandering near the mats once the race has started
  • Help with any data collection needed to process times and results

Transition Area Set-up Volunteer:

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2008: Transition Area Set-up Volunteers will report to the park area at 24th Street at Atlantic Avenue at 10:00 AM.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2008: Transition Area Set-up Volunteers will report to the 24th Street Park at 4:00 AM.  You will check-in at the Volunteer Table and receive your T-shirt.  You will then report to the Transition Area Coordinator for specific directions.  After the race is over, you are invited to join us for the Post-Race Party.

Duties:
  • Help unload and assemble bike racks
  • Help setting up cones used in the vacinity of the transition area
  • Help put up sand fencing in some areas
  • Volunteers should not mind getting a little dirty and should be able to lift at least 25 lbs
